Up close and personal with the virtual reality headset revolution, from PlayStation’s prototype to Facebook’s new Rift
I was at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco last week, getting some extended eye time with the latest niche VR technology taking gaming by storm. This week, Facebook buys poster-boy Oculus VR for $2bn and it becomes a global concern. Luckily, I wrote down a load of words to try and make sense of it all.
First up, some first-hand reports: the development story of Sony PlayStation’s Project Morpheus VR prototype (pictured) sets things up, followed by full hands-ons with the Morpheus and Oculus Rift DK2 headsets. Finally, I address the Facebook buyout, and how Oculus selling is no shock – the future of VR is a) expensive and b) bigger than games.
