Fear and loathing on the Games Media Awards shortlist

No, I haven’t won anything. Or grown my hair. Yet.

The above picture is taken with ShortList’s mighty Andrew Dickens, back in the olden days – 2009 – when the Games Media Awards were held at Jongleurs in Camden, the gongs were handed out to brands not individual writers (we’re smiling because we’ve just won Best Mainstream Magazine Coverage, the first of ShortList’s three-and-counting GMAs) and orange Hummers were just an unfortunate glint in a northern businessman’s eye.

Well, the Games Media Awards, the veritable Oscars of video games journalism, is back with its shortlist for the big event in October, and  – what do you know? – it’s reverted to the writer- not brand-led pre-2009 system, back when the esteemed Simon Munk used to hoover up awards for fun.

More excitingly, I’ve been shortlisted for Mainstream Magazine Writer of the Year alongside Jonny Pile of ShortList (obvs), Helen Lewis of New Statesman, James Dyer of Empire and Leon Poultney of Sunday Times/Zoo. Very chuffed, especially after T3 woz robbed/beaten fairly last year.

The full shortlist is here. Well done to all involved. See you at Borough Vinopolis in October. Here’s hoping Greg Davies gets the hosting gig again…
